Or really a Friday. I’m going to blog my Sunday thoughts a little early this week. Sunday is the Superbowl so I am trying to get all my homework done before then so I can stress-free celebrate the Chief’s win.
So anyway, this week is full of local news and praise for my wonderful peers.
I’ll start with Charlie’s front page story on the Sunday/Monday edition about the D&H vaccine event. I thought it was great how many different sources he got and he included some fantastic quotes. I thought it showed how thorough of a job he did reporting.
Next, I’d like to shoutout Madi Stephens’ story about the Como Mask Bank for teachers. I thought this was such a good story and the photography was great too. I loved that Madi got to go connect with this part of the community and enjoyed hearing her talk about it in class. She mentioned how she found more tidbits of info in the informal conversations she had when just spending time with the sources. I wonder where she got the information about this event. It is great we knew about this and were able to cover it.
A little bit of fun news, I enjoyed this article about a Thailand photographer. What he is doing is much along the lines of what I would like to do so it was interesting reading about it and how he has gotten there. I also thought he had amazing work.
A little bit more fun news, I enjoyed this piece about Gov. Parson making a Super Bowl bet. I know it isn’t the most newsworthy story, but with all the bad news around Parson lately, it was nice to see something fun. I also wonder how this story came about and how we learned about it to report on it. Props to the reporter.
Back to praising my wonderful peers, next up is a state gov. piece about vaccine rollout. The thing that I really want to mention about this article is how it’s a great example of the power of the summary. I read the headline, glanced at the picture, and was all set to scroll past UNTIL I saw the article teaser. Our little friend the Summary box in Blox. For this story, it featured a fun little quote about shifting the blame. It pulled me in and got me to read the article. Which was great! I thought it was very informative. It showed a lot of holes in our coverage on vaccines though (such as we’d like to cover vaccine hesitancy more [I might have something for this btw]). Tristen also had amazing photos yet again.
Lastly, I was just assigned a candidate to cover in the upcoming city council election. I missed their initial forum, but was able to find it online. Kelsey did attend it though and she wrote this fantastic summary of it! It was very informative and I thought it did hit all the key points of the meeting, while leaving out the boring other stuff.
Stayed tuned next week as I publish a longer term piece, have another GA shift, and of course Sunday thoughts. Next week’s will feature a wider variety of news sources as I realize I’ve become hyper focused on the Missourian.
